Estimating the age of Bottlenose Dolphins

27 April 2018 | DWC Blog

Estimating the age of Bottlenose Dolphins is a toothy business!

The age of Bottlenose Dolphins can vary significantly around the world, with estimates ranging from 25-50 years or more!

Whilst there are many factors that influence the life expectancy of dolphins. We believe some dolphins in Jervis Bay could be up to 40 years old!

Bottlenose Dolphin Bubbles - Dolphin Watch Cruises
Dolphins age is estimated by looking at their teeth! (And also samples from their vertebrae.) Similar to rings on a tree, scientists can calculate the age of dolphins from layers of growth within dolphin teeth!

Not just useful for eating and social interactions after all!

If you would like to see what Dolphin teeth look like…. Drop into our office at 50 Owen Street in Huskisson, where we have a skull on display donated to us by ORRCA.
Come and see what else we have in our cabinet too! Lots to learn about!
